Christian Spirituality: Extreme Engineering For Extreme Conditions

God is a competent engineer for the most extreme conditions in life.

An automobile commercial on television said this about the vehicle, “This isn’t the end of the world – Extreme conditions call for extreme engineering. Inside every land Rover you’ll find a patented Terrain Response ? System that will help you out of even the most extraordinary situations.”

I would be diminishing God if I were to compare him to the Terrain Response System or the vehicle itself. It is far more appropriate to compare him to the genius engineer who designs the Terrain Response System.

Yes, during the last few years I had thought I was facing the end of the world. I was worried sick for our children who made some very poor choices when transitioning to adulthood. The experience, however, only served to expose the inadequacy of my own Terrain Response System. It exposes the fact that I have been relying on my own strength and wisdom instead of God’s. When the situation I had to face was out of my control, I had to move over to let God get in the driver’s seat.

The apostle Paul said, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28) I suppose he means that even the most extraordinary situations will work out for the good according to God’s purpose, but not necessarily according to my plans.

There is something freeing about this. God the competent engineer is in the driver seat. I can simply go along for the ride.

What have been some extreme conditions or situations in your life? What are some emotions you experience as a result? What might be the barriers for trusting God to work for the good of those who love him? How might you begin to remove these barriers?

When I realized I wasn’t in control of my young adult sons’ destinies anymore, (often reminded of this by them), I learned to pray for guidance. It is a comfort.
I’m beginning to accept that they are blazing their own trail. I remind myself that as a parent, this was the goal – to raise them to be capable, independent
individuals. Prayer keeps my mind open to wisdom and personal goal-setting.

Hi Jill, Sorry for taking so long to respond to your comment (due to my travel schedule). Indeed, letting go of our adult children to allow them to blaze their own trail is a growing experience for parents. Ultimately this is also a matter of trusting God to be our capable Parent who can watch over our children even when we are not watching. Blessings!
